Solar powered hot water systems

Harp Windows are now an Eco Solar Equipment (ESE) approved installer, offering our customers the benefit of hot water systems powered by solar energy.

How does it work?
An ESE solar hot water system uses the energy of the sun to directly heat water. The process is very efficient, making it one of the most cost effective renewable energy sources for both domestic and commercial applications.

The energy is absorbed in the solar collector (panel) usually mounted on the roof. The heat is transferred to the hot water cylinder via heat exchangers. ESE solar hot water systems work in conjunction with an existing boiler but will do most of the work. The cylinder stores the hot water that is heated during the day ready to use when required.

Evacuated tubes: A row of glass tubes that each contain an absorber feeding into a mainfold, which transports the heated fluid. Flat plate: A flat absorber plate with a transparent cover to collect the sun's heat.

As an ESE authorised installer, ESE supplies Harp Windows with solar hot water systems that include options from a range of collectors (both flat plate and evacuated tube), a selection of hot water cylinders (120L - 320L, pressurised or unpressurised), plus different installation options. Generally evacuated tubes are more efficient, but many consumers prefer the aesthetic look of the flat plate. By offering our customers a choice of both systems, we then have the ability to select the best system for each installation.

Why solar?
Dependence on non-renewable energy sources must dramatically decrease. Solar energy being the most abundant and almost infinite, it is the most obvious source to make use of. Since solar technology does not rely on the sunlight itself but on solar radiation, it can work efficiently in the UK to provide up to 70% of typical annual domestic hot water requirements.

Using the sun as a renewable energy source helps the environment, leads to reduced energy bills and means less reliance on gas and electricity for water heating.

Contrary to popular belief, the UK receives enough solar energy year-round to make a hot water system totally viable!

  • One of the cheapest forms of renewable energy,

  • Can be used to heat hot water in homes and businesses, and will even heat swimming pools!

  • Reduced energy bills,

  • Will produce up to 70% of the annual hot water for free,

  • Less reliance on non-renewables,

  • Reduce CO2 emissions,

  • Can save between 400 and 1300 kg of CO2 emissions per year,

  • A visible sign of environmental awareness and commitment,

  • Adds value to your property,

  • Durable, low maintenance and fully conforms to BS EN12975 as standard.

How is it installed?
Solar powered hot water systemWe survey your property and decide upon which system you would like installed. A typical domestic solar hot water installation requires the replacement of the hot water cylinder, installation of a pump station, control unit and the solar collector panels.

For ease of installation all ESE solar hot water systems are delivered to us as complete tailored kits for each customer, with either flat plate or evacuated tube collectors, hot water cylinder, pump station, control unit, flexible piping etc. Even all the nuts, bolts, fixings and documentation required to complete an entire installation are included. Your solar installation kit uses pre-insulated flexible piping with simple connections, completely eliminating the need for any dangerous brazing or complicated copper pipe work.
